Who started Mother’s Day and why?

Mother’s Day holiday started around in the 1900s by the efforts of Anna Maria Jarvis of Philadephia. She was very active in her local church where she ran Mothers' Day Work Clubs to combat high infant and child mortality rates, mostly due to diseases that ravaged her community. Following her mother’s death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.
